I think I might be able to help you. (Not sure though.) My best guess is to go into vista, and click on the side bar of the start menu that says "Networking", then see if your computers come up from there(The XP definitely should)....

You create an Ad-Hoc connection. When you create an ad-hoc connection, other computers can see it and they can connect without a router. It is possible to connect more than just 2 computers using this method....
Networking problem for a LAN connection?
First thing...check your computers that they are set up as work group computers... once that is done...creat a network connection between the 4 computers....
